Long: Slip is an iPhone app by TKN Studio that turns paper receipts into a spreadsheet. You snap a receipt and Slip reads the merchant, date, VAT or sales tax and total into a table in about three seconds, marks any field worth checking and checks that the total matches subtotal plus tax. At month end you export CSV, Excel or PDF with the receipt photos, plus a VAT summary rate by rate. Receipts live on your phone with no account or sign-in; the photo is read on Slip's server and isn't kept. On the website, a free six-question quiz (where your receipts end up, who they're for, how many you get, which tax is printed on them, where the numbers go) builds a receipt plan: your columns, your tax rates and your month-end file. Slip Pro (unlimited receipts within fair use, the VAT summary, CSV, Excel and PDF export and the medium widget; free is 5 receipts a month) is offered as a pre-order: access starts when the iPhone app is released, with a full refund before then and an automatic refund if it isn't released. Slip is a record-keeping tool, not tax advice.
How it works
- Tell it about your receipts. Where they end up, who they're for (freelance work, a small business, work expenses or the household budget), how many you get and which tax is printed on them.
- Get your receipt plan. Your columns, your tax rates, your month-end file and a sample row. Add your email to see it.
- Snap, check, save. In the Slip app, you snap a receipt and the merchant, date, VAT and total are read in about three seconds. Anything Slip isn't sure about is marked, and one tap fixes it.
- Export the month. CSV, Excel or PDF with the receipt photos, plus a VAT summary rate by rate, for your accountant or your own spreadsheet.
